A word from our artist: Angela Marr-Grogan
When creating custom works, the conceptual design process for me as an artist is extremely important. This was especially the case when creating custom artworks for the Indigenous Clothing Company Designer Bag Range.
As the mediums were unique, I had to consider the size of the bags, the style, features, colour and the surface during the creative design process.
The colour of the bags was the most important element I felt I needed to consider. Usually I get to decide the base colour when creating culturally inspired works, however as this was already predetermined I had to create designs and a colour palette that worked with the existing bag colour.
Colour theory and symbolism are also considered during the design process. To ensure that all the colours are harmonious and work together I like to use colour theory. I also prefer to mix my own paints to form a unique colour palette. I usually start with a colour base and create variations by colour tinting. Along with the tints, my palette is usually colour theory based and limited to four (4) distinct colours.
Colour symbolism is extremely important to me as an Aboriginal artist. Ensuring that appropriate colour choices are made and used to form up the design or artwork is an essential consideration in the creative process.
I only use colours that I believe are a true representation of the artwork story and features. This is especially the case when natural elements are incorporated into designs, or when I’m using colour to connect with others and evoke a feeling or an emotion.
The shape and style of the designer bags were also considered, and I felt that designs simplistic but effective in style were best suited for the custom bags. I didn’t want the artwork to overshadow the quality finish or overall look of the bags, my intentions were for my designs to simply enhance them.
Placement of the artwork was also an important element, this was to ensure that the designs complemented the style of the bag and highlighted the bags existing features.
As with all of my artworks, symmetry with the use of circles, intricate dot and line work in a contemporary style feature on the bags. The designs were carefully handcrafted over many hours with fine acrylic paints, and then sealed with a protective lacquer to ensure an everlasting finish.
I really enjoyed creating culturally inspired designs and bespoke pieces for the Indigenous Clothing Companies (ICC) designer bag range. I look forward to creating for the ICC team again.
Marrumbu! (Thank you)
